Channel Repairs

The steady march towards modernization continues for the city of Stockton, infrastructure projects and renovations are bringing back a once-great city. Stockton's waterfront is a main focus for upcoming projects like the $900 million bridge renovations approved by CalTrans, the $45 million port upgrades, and miscellaneous nature preservation projects totaling $12 million. The approved bridge renovations are set to begin in late 2026, the 2700-foot bridge structures over the Stockton Channel were first built late in 1970. The need for the project was recognized in 2014 following a Caltrans inspection that deemed there to be structural deficiencies in the bridge structures, soil liquefaction around the base of the bridge is the main reason for its deterioration. The city of Stockton is on a path to modernize alongside its sister cities the San Joaquin Valley, part of the initiative to modernize is the rejuvenation of Stockton's streets and motorways. The recent Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 is a driving factor behind the bridge renovations, over $530 million have been allocated for renovations.

Seeking Funds

These initiatives end up as forgotten projects when not funded enough, efforts to improve the city of Stockton have stagnated in the past following mixed results. Initiatives like universal basic income were tried early in 2019, the project carried on during the pandemic and yielded results that showed a marked increase in areas like mental and physical health but the study did not yield sufficient evidence to prove the negative effects of universal basic income. Regardless, the project was discontinued following the media coverage and inconclusive results of the program. Stockton's lofty infrastructure goals need funding that it sorely lacks, in May, the city council voted in favor of implementing a gas tax for the 50,000-foot plan brought to life by Public Works Director Chad Reed. The proposal was unanimously approved by a council seeking to fix street cracks, potholes, and damaged sidewalks in a county that has over 100,000 commuters daily. On May 7th Stockton's City Council approved the proposal 7-0, the streets of Stockton should expect a facelift following the implementation of the new gas tax.

Fixing Cracked Streets

Stockton should expect nearly $6 million in gas tax revenue just next year, these funds will be used to repave and repair 40 miles of roads around the city of Stockton. Public Works Director Chad Reed clarified that potholes and alligator cracks were a top priority when fixing the streets, these damages to the street can lead to water seeping in and further damaging the road's asphalt. Apart from the gas tax revenue Reed has pledged to repair sidewalks, curbs, and gutters as well as build pedestrian ramps for the local community, residents of Stockton should expect delays as bidding is ongoing between local companies. More than $1.5 million are set aside to renovate bridges alongside road and sidewalk repairs, the upcoming renovations come alongside a wave of beautification projects coming to Stockton. The city's council also plans to expand the tax going forward, the gas tax may see a drop off because of electric vehicles. New residents should rest assured knowing that the roads of their future home are not only being maintained but updated regularly.
