Top 5 Best Neighborhoods in Bakersfield, CA

Bakersfield is a welcoming community located at the southern side of the San Joaquin Valley and 130 miles from the Pacific Ocean. We enjoy warm summers and cool, not freezing, winters. Our population is 385,000 and many work in the surrounding farmland.

Because of the summer heat, many of our homes and apartment complexes have pools. The median home price is also quite affordable at $263,000, and the median household income is right around $60,000. We’ll get more specific for each of the following neighborhoods.

Education is important to us here, as shown by the fact that we have four excellent colleges. These include California State University, Bakersfield, Bakersfield College, Taft College, and California Aeronautical University (CAU).

Tevis Ranch

In the western part of Bakersfield is Tevis Ranch, a lovely suburb full of modern homes, both one and two story, and lots of green lawns and trees. The population here is nearly around 4,800.

Not only is Tevis Ranch nice, it’s extremely affordable. The median home price is right around $250,000, while the median household income is $82,800. If you have kids in the k-6 age range, you’ll be happy to know that Old River Elementary School is in the neighborhood. If you want to go to a nice outdoor area to have a picnic or to play with your kids, check out Tevis Park.

Derrel’s is here, too. Our White Ln. location is in the Tevis Ranch neighborhood. So, if you live here, you’ll always have a good storage facility nearby.

CSU Bakersfield Neighborhood

If you’re looking for a college-town atmosphere, you can’t beat the homes around CSU Bakersfield. Of course, if you’re a CSU Bakersfield student, this is probably the ideal neighborhood for you, but many others will enjoy it as well.

Here, the median household income is $73,000 and the median home price is $185,000. This is a fun place to live, near the Shops at River Walk where you can enjoy shopping, great restaurants, and the occasional show. There may be restrictions during COVID, so be sure to check the website for additional information.

Downtown Bakersfield

Do you like living close to shops, restaurants, banking, groceries, and entertainment? Then you may want to live in the Downtown Bakersfield district. Here, the median household income is lower than many other spots at $31,500, but if you make more, you may still want to consider it. If you’ve lived in a city and enjoy a fast-paced area, this is for you.The median home listing price is $208,000, and there are also plenty of apartments to rent. You’ll be close to attractions like the Rabobank Arena, Maya Cinemas, and the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History & Science. Plus, Bakersfield High School is in this district, so if you have kids in grades 9 - 12, this is also a great spot.

The Oaks

In northwest Bakersfield is a neighborhood called The Oaks, with a population of 5,000, two schools, and an open feel. Those schools are Leo B., Hart Elementary School, and Tevis Junior High School, so your kids won’t even have to go out of the neighborhood. You’ll find plenty of restaurants and shopping in the area. Plus, this is home to Pin Oak Park, where you and your kids can play sports, have a picnic, or walk your dog.

While the area is packed with homes, it still has a spacious feel, with wide streets and plenty of greenery.

The median household income here is a high $92,000, while the home prices are still extremely affordable, averaging $250,000.

Artisan

The aptly named Artisan neighborhood is a beautiful area in northern Bakersfield filled with affordable, two-story homes. In fact, the median home price here is a surprising $258,000. Since the median household income is $98,000, one can live really well here.

The neighborhood is primarily residential, though it is also home to Bakersfield Fire Station 14, so you can feel safe knowing there’s a fire department right in your backyard. and Something Sweet Cookie Company. When it comes time to go shopping or to a restaurant, there’s a large shopping center that includes a Kohls, Walmart Supercenter and a lot more just a few minutes east along Harris Rd. Artisan includes Greystone Park, a lovely place to play sports and to picnic with the family on a sunny day.

While many of the homes here are quite spacious, you still may need to rent a self storage unit for your off-season things, for your business, or just to make even more free room in your house or apartment. Remember that Derrel’s is here for your storage needs with 18 storage facilities in Bakersfield.
